These photos absolutely break my heart. 

This is the process of a calf being born to a dairy cow and ripped away moments after birth to be confined in a veal crate.
This happens to every male calf born to a dairy cow.  The female calves grow up to replace the other dairy cows.  Most dairy cows are forcibly impregnated and give birth about once a year, every year, to produce a steady supply of milk.  Once her body can no longer sustain being a milk and baby machine, she is slaughtered.  This usually happens after 3-4 years.  The normal lifespan of a cow is about 25 years.
